Dreamworks is partnering with Electronic Arts to develop a live-action movie based on Need for Speed (NFS), the popular series of racing video games. For those who don't know, Need for Speed is the most successful racing video game series in the world, and one of the most successful video game franchises of all time. Director Scott Waugh (who previously helmed Act of Valor) is in charge of the project. And George and John Gatins (who wrote the screenplay of Real Steel) will pen the script. They're eying a theatrical release in 2014.
"I'm excited about getting back into the creative trenches with John and George Gatins and my partners at EA to bring to life an exhilarating script based on an epic video game that seems to have been made for the movies. This is a big piece of business for DreamWorks."
Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks Chairman
"It's fantastic to be working with a team that shares not only our love of cars, but also our passion for creating blockbuster action experiences. This collaboration will be greatly enhanced with the team at DreamWorks – which is a great home for the Need for Speed franchise."
Patrick Soderlund, Electronic Arts
